How Much Power Do You Need?

This is one of the few 1 horsepower units on our list of the best garbage disposals because it’s more power than many households need. When a kitchen is busy enough to need this much power, though, you won’t want to be without it. There are two measurements that are used to describe the power of garbage disposal, but one is much more important than the other.

Revolutions per minute, or RPM, describe how fast the motor will spin at an appropriate rate, but that rate doesn’t determine the size or power of the garbage disposal. Most units have an RPM between 2200 and 3000 no matter what their actual capability. Horsepower, or HP, is the measure that describes how strong the motor is.

Garbage disposals use HP to determine the “size” of the model. They are available in the following sizes:

One-Third (1/3) Horsepower

While this is the smallest garbage disposal available, it’s great for small living space. They tend to be priced lower since the motor is smaller. They are the perfect choice for condos, studio apartments, or underneath bar sinks that won't see heavy food preparation use. Generally speaking, a 1/3 HP garbage disposal will be the right size for a household with one or two people who aren’t avid cooks.

One-Half (1/2) Horsepower

This is one of the most common sizes of garbage disposals found. It’s great for homes with three to five people, depending on how often they cook. If you're in a moderately sized home with a small family and don't prepare large meals for many guests on a regular basis, this is likely a great size garbage disposal for your needs. You'll often find ½ HP garbage disposals in apartments that have two or three bedrooms, and they’re common in 2 or 3-bedroom houses.

Three-Fourths (3/4) Horsepower

A ¾ HP motor is the ideal choice for many single-family homes. It is appropriate for most households with four to six people. Since this motor will have a bit more power, it can tackle a bit tougher food. Some models are able to handle melon rinds, while other proport to be able to chew through chicken bones. If you expect to be putting items like that down the drain on a regular basis, though, you’ll want to step up to a larger disposal.

Most households who find that they prefer a ¾ HP model are very similar in size to those with ½ HP. The biggest difference tends to be the frequency with which they cook at home or entertain. Those who use their kitchen more may want the increased size, while those who prefer to order dinner, may be fine with the smaller motor.

1 Horsepower

A garbage disposal with 1 HP, like this Waste King L-8000, is able to handle just about anything. It has the power to clean up after large parties, chew up chicken bones, grind rinds, and keep working until even a family of 8 is done cleaning up their dishes, every day. This is the garbage disposal for those who use their kitchen with frequency, love, and sometimes a bit of abuse. The Waste King L-8000 can handle any job your wash through it, and it won’t complain.

The Waste King L-8000 Garbage Disposal with Power Cord and 1HP is a reliable and powerful disposal. It’s easy to install and can power through anything you put down the drain.
