Kitchen Faucet Buying Guide
Now that you have read the reviews for 10 of the best kitchen faucets on the market it's time to delve into our buying guide. We are 1st going to discuss 15 things to think about when you are shopping for a kitchen faucet. Then we will cover finishes, and finally we will talk about installing a kitchen faucet on your own.
15 Things to Consider When Buying a Kitchen Faucet
There are a lot of different options and features that come with a traditional kitchen faucet. Sometimes it's easy to stand in the aisle of a big hardware store and feel lost when looking at all of the various Faucets that are available. That is where this section comes in handy, because we will talk about the things that you should be considering while looking at the best options for your home.
One of the first things to consider when selecting a new kitchen faucet is to think about the type of faucet you want and where you're going to be using it. For example, is your sink located in a traditional area of your kitchen? Meaning is it located near the wall with a back spot. Or is it located on an island. Also, do you want one handle or two? Another thing to think about when looking at the different types of faucets is do you want a sprayer integrated into the faucet or do you want a side sprayer?
The reach of a faucet is essentially how far away from the faucet body the spigot is. Having a large reach means that you will be able to fit and maneuver more things around the faucet, but if your sink is not equally big, you may run into Splash and spill problems. The ideal faucet reach is half of the depth of your sink from front to back. If you know what you're sinks dimensions are then you can more easily select a faucet reach that fits within that range.
You might wonder what it takes for a faucet to be ADA compliant. This is a brief overview of the regulations and that section of the code.
Not everybody needs an ADA compliant faucet, but if you do, then it's nice to know that you have one. If you have mobility or access limitations, an ADA compliant faucet will allow you to take more control over your life and grant you a little more independence when it comes to using your kitchen sink.
Dual or Two-Handle Faucets
Two handled faucets maybe out of Vogue right now, but they still have their place. Sometimes you want to be able to twist one handle and get pure hot or pure cold water. Sometimes you just like the look of two handles for your faucets. Whatever your reason, don't discount a two handle faucet just because single handle faucets are what's currently hot.
The design of a faucet has a lot to do with your personal decisions. Some people like different looks on their faucet. Some prefer a high arch, some like a low Arch, and some like the traditional gooseneck faucet. Keep in mind that this is your kitchen faucet and this decision is one that you have to live with for a very long time.
Sink Shape & Type
Consider whether you have a single Basin or double basin sink, and what the shape of your sync is. If you have a round sink, then a different faucet may look better with it then another. Additionally, the shape of the sink will determine how your reach will best fit in. You don't want to have a long and narrow sink paired up with a faucet with a high reach.
Having a kitchen faucet that is easily moved is always a plus. Especially when you think about the sprayer head. Make sure that the sprayer head is easily maneuverable and is long enough for your needs. Some sprayer heads are pull-down, some are spring pull down. The spring pulldown will usually not have an extra length of Hose but the spring will provide enough play to give the sprayer head a lot of reach and maneuverability.
Pretty much everybody now is concerned about the environment at least a little bit. And water conservation is one of the biggest ways you can help with your kitchen think and faucet. There are also new regulations for States such as California that regulate how many gallons per minute a new appliance can have.
Your budget should be one of the overarching concerns when it comes to any major purchase. The best way to go about figuring your budget is to look at all of the options available for kitchen sinks which we hopefully layout and our numerous unbiased reviews and multiple buying guides, and then see what sinks fit those criteria. If you get a sink that falls within your self-imposed budget amount, then great. If not, then you may have to start looking towards either eliminating some features, or searching for lesser-known brands.
Most major manufacturers of kitchen faucets will offer at least a limited lifetime warranty. It behooves your to know whether the faucet you are purchasing has this protection. The warranty will usually cover the internal workings of the faucet to ensure that it will remain trip and leak free. It will also sometimes cover the exterior finish provided that it's not a specialty finish.
If your warranty does cover the finish, keep in mind that using harsh cleansers will more than likely void this warranty. And another bit of small print for warranties is that they only cover the original purchaser for as long as they on the home that the faucet was originally installed and.
A faucet cartridge is essentially a one piece unit inside a faucet that controls its valves. This is so you as a homeowner can easily repair your own leaky faucet. It also provides a manufacturer with a point of quality control where they can ensure that the cartridges are all manufacturer to exacting specifications. When a kitchen faucet begins to leak, having a single unit that you can replace to fix the leak is not just convenient, it's a great selling and buying point. Keep in mind that some manufacturers have proprietary cartridges. If you plan on selling your home, then the lifetime limited warranty for your faucet will no longer apply.
The arc height of a faucet will essentially tell you how tall the faucet is at the highest point. A higher arc faucet is nice because even if your outlet clearance is not that large, you can still work a container underneath to allow it to fill.
The water flow measurement can be deceiving at first glance. This is measured at gallons per minute at a set pressure. However if you lower the pressure of your water supply, then the flow rate drops. So when you look at this, whether it's a 1.5 gallons per minute or a 2.2 gallon per minute faucet, a look at the pressure rating to see whether you will get the same performance.
A faucet aerator is designed to mix water in with air to increase the volume of the water coming out. This increase in volume increases the waters cleaning power, and makes it feel as if there is more water coming out than there actually is. There are multiple types of aerators available. Some are traditional, while others produce intricate water flows that look like a complex net or weave of water coming out in a beautiful spiral. You can even get faucets that don't have an aerator and produce a laminar flow. A laminar flow provides a crystal clear flow of water that almost looks static until you interrupted.
The finish of your faucet is one of the final pieces in the puzzle that is your kitchen faucet and sink. There are multiple finishes available for every faucet. Traditionally, people tell you that you have to match the finish of your faucet to the finish of your kitchen Hardware. That means that if you have bronze drawer pulls, you need a bronze faucet. Newer design actually tells you that you don't have to match colors. You can match finishes instead. That means if you have oil bronze on your drawers, you could get a brushed bronze on your faucet. If you have a brushed nickel on your drawer pulls, you could match the brushed finish on your faucet. Don't be fooled into thinking that you are locked into a single color.
What is a Faucet Escutcheon?
What happens when you love a faucet, but it only has a single hole mount, but your sink has three holes in it? What do you do about those other unsightly things? A faucet escutcheon is a way to let you install a single hole faucet when your sink has two or more holes. The escutcheon is essentially a long deck plate that will serve to cover the other holes. Most manufacturers will include an escutcheon in their single hole faucet kits. However, they may not be wide enough to cover all of the holes. If they aren't, you can often get custom or generic deck plates that will serve to cover every unused installation hole.
Know Your Common Finish Options
When it comes to your faucet finish, there are several options available. Some of the more common are your neutral finishes which includes stainless steel and Chrome. These are bright finishes which match pretty much every style of Decor out there. However if you are looking to make more of a design impact statement, consider looking at these other finishes.
Brass is a finish that is often confused with bronze, but is different in its highlights. Brass polish is extremely well, but overtime achieves a patina that many find very attractive. Solid brass faucets are often more expensive however, so it is a situation where it becomes price versus Beauty.
Nickel is a great finish Choice when you still want something neutral, but you want something that stands out a little bit. That is because nickel has a certain Elegance to it that isn't achieved with chrome or stainless steel. You can get Nickel in both a brushed finish and a rubbed finish.
Brushed metals are nice and that they give you a naturally fingerprint-resistant finish. A brushed nickel, or brushed stainless steel will allow you to not clean your faucets every 5 minutes simply because there is a fingerprint.
Oil Rubbed Bronze
Oil rubbed bronze is a great look if you're going for vintage or darker decor. Oil rubbed bronze is extremely easy to care for, but you have to be careful to ensure that it isn't just a thin coating over a less durable material.
Spot Resistant Finishes
These are great for more economical finishes that you still want to avoid cleaning every half hour. You can get stainless steel with a spot resistant finished that well allow you to wipe your shiny faucet down and clean it easily with a damp or dry cloth.
Types of Kitchen Faucets
There are as many types of kitchen faucets as there are types of kitchens it seems. Here is a brief rundown on some of the more common types and why they are beneficial, and what some of the more common drawbacks are.
A single handle faucet allows you to control the temperature and intensity of the water flow from a single handle. This is obviously nice because both controls are in one spot. However, this can often prevent extremely fine control, so if you are somebody who likes their water exactly 42 degrees Fahrenheit when you drink it then this type of faucet may not be for you.
Double handle faucets are nice in that they are definitely more traditional type and look good and pretty much any decor. However, they are more difficult to clean and they are also more difficult to operate if you have Mobility restrictions. Additionally, these require a three or more hole mounting system rather than just a single hole like a single handle faucet.
Touch Activated Faucets
Atouch activated faucet usually has the touch on and touch off as a backup method of control to a single or double handle. This is extremely nice because it helps you to maintain sanitary conditions in your kitchen. One of the worst things you can do after all is to have cross contamination from raw meats to other surfaces. By allowing you to use the back of your hand or your forearm as an activation service, you can keep your kitchen clean and prevent handing out salmonella to your guests and family.
Touchless Faucet / Hands-Free Faucets
Touchless faucets are much like touch-activated faucets except you don't have to actually touch the faucet to turn it on. These use a variety of sensors from infrared to proximity sensors. The primary drawback to a touchless faucet is that it does require a power source. So you either have to install batteries or you have to get an AC adapter.
Pull-Out Kitchen Faucets
Pull out kitchen faucets have a spray head installed in the body of the faucet. This is extremely handy because you no longer have a side sprayer that faces forward. That means that if the faucet is accidentally activated, it's not spraying all over your kitchen.
Wall Mounted Pot Fillers
A wall mounted pot filler is essentially a single temperature spigot that lets you fill pots quickly. This is more of an accessory or add-on to an existing kitchen sink system. But it can still be extremely handy especially if you need to fill large buckets or pots quickly.
Kitchen Faucets for Water Conservation
Water conservation is extremely important, especially if you're worried about lowering your carbon footprint or running up a high water bill. Here are two of the primary ways that faucets enable water conservation.
- Low Flow - low-flow faucets essentially ensure that you don't use a large amount of water. But they also have other tricks up their sleeves so that you don't notice that you're using gallons less. Most used different style aerators that introduce a different mix of air into the water stream. Others also use smaller diameter water lines which increase the pressure of the water coming out.
- Touchless and Touch Options - touchless and touch faucets might not seem like they are a way to assistant water conservation. However, they are because they have built-in timers. If the water is running for more than 3 minutes in most cases, the faucet will automatically shut off. If you are a person who is absent minded or sometimes forgets to turn off your faucet, this is a great way to ensure that you aren't wasting water.
By no means are these the only methods of water conservation available to you when you shop for kitchen faucets. However these two methods are the most common.
What to Do About a Leaky Faucet
A leaky faucet is annoying in more than one way. Not only can it cause irritation from the sound and the site, it can also lead to extremely high water bills. Thankfully, you don't need the assistance of a professional plumber to diagnose and potentially fix your own leaky faucet. Here it is a step-by-step guide to diagnosing and fixing your own leaky faucet.
- First turn off the water. Your water shut-off valves should be underneath your sink. They will look like small Chrome twist handles. Turn them to the right or clockwise to shut off the water.
- The second thing you need to do is plug the drain. The reason why you want to plug the drain is so that you don't lose any small parts. If you don't have a sink plug, then use a rag.
- Next look at your faucets installation instructions to discover if you have a ceramic disc, a cartridge, or a ball faucet. Depending on the type of faucet you have will determine what parts you need to fix it.
- Depending on the type of faucet you have, you will need to repair it in a different way. There are several good YouTube videos that will walk you through the various steps. You can usually find specific videos specially designed for your brand of faucet.
- Once you have repaired the faucet by following the instructions on the video, make sure that you unplug the sink and turn the water cutoff valve back on. To do this, turn the valve counterclockwise or to the left. Take out the aerator disc in your faucet. Now turn the water on slowly. Let the water run for a few minutes. The reason you remove the aerator disc is because while you have been fixing the faucet, there may be pieces that were dislodged and you don't want those getting trapped.
That's it; you have now repaired your faucet. Keep in mind, if at any point you are uncomfortable with doing any of this on your own, stop and consult a professional. It is far better to pay somebody to repair your leaky faucet then to pay somebody to repair a major plumbing issue.
Water Filtration Options
One of the major things with kitchen faucets that you may be considering is water filtration. After all most of us drink water straight from the tap. A water filter can do more than just provide you with clean drinking water; it can also provide you with peace of mind during smaller emergencies or boil water advisories. Here are two things you should be looking at or considering when it comes to water filtration.
Faucet Water Filters
Faucet water filters come in two distinct types. First are external filters that mount to the faucet itself and allow you to generate filtered or unfiltered water. The second type is a filter that installs any water line before the faucet. In general we would recommend a water filter that installs in the waterline, especially if you are considering a pull-down faucet. That is because the water filter will not install on a pull down unit without significant work. A water filter that is installed in line is installed under the sink and operates on the same principle. In many cases you can get a control system that mounts above the sink where you can select between filtered and unfiltered water.
Water softeners are not a water filter and that they do not remove contaminants from the water. What a water softener does is to remove minerals from your water that can create residue or spotting. It does this by introducing salts into the water that attach to free metal ions. Water softeners are great for 6 because they increase the foaming capability of your dish soap. If you've ever noticed that you have hard water, you've probably noticed that your dish soap does not produce as many suds or bubbles as you'd like. And this case, a water softener will usually do the trick.
