Commercial Kitchen Faucets Buying Guide

Modern Faucet with Undermount

Now that you have read all of our faucet reviews, you have a starting point when it comes to finding the best commercial kitchen faucet for your home. Now, it's time to delve into some of the most important features to look out for in kitchen faucets.

Things to Look Out For

There are a lot of things to consider when looking at kitchen faucets. There are a lot of different styles and a lot of different manufacturers out there, many of which offer trademark and patented options that each claim to be better than the next. Here we are going to show you how to get to the substance beneath the flash and glamour and find out what you should be looking for.

  • Spout Height

The spout height is basically what determines how much room you have between your kitchen counter or installation deck, and the bottom of the spout. This distance is not as vital in a commercial kitchen faucet as it would be in another because you can move the spray head out of the way in most cases.

However, you still want to pay attention to that measurement because it will give you an idea of how low the spray head will hang.

Another great thing to look at when it comes to your spout height or spout clearance is what the length of the pre rinse sprayer hose is. This will give you an idea of how easy it will be to get the sprayer down to the bottom of your sink or stretch it out to reach a pot or flower vase on the counter.

  • Spout Length

This dimension refers to how far away from the faucet body your sprayer spout is. This will give you an idea of the range of your sprayer head. The greater this distance then the more room you're going to have when it comes to bringing your sprayer away from the faucet body or even scratching it from side to side.

Be careful that this dimension does not become too great however. If it's too long oh, then you run the risk of your water flow splashing too close to the front of your sink and potentially making a mess.

  • Water Pressure

Water pressure and flow rate are intertwined. In general the rate of flow in your kitchen will be measured at the maximum water pressure of 60 PSI. That is generally the pressure that most municipalities will provide water to a home. If you need increased pressure, then narrowing the diameter of your water lines can often help.

The physics is a little complicated, but essentially for pushing the same rate of flow, the more narrow the water line, the greater the water pressure. In real life, this means that if you have 1/2 inch water lines, consider changing to 3/8 inch water lines.

  • Sink Depth

Your kitchen sink depth should be a consideration because that will also determine how much splashing you're going to get from your faucet. If you have a very deep sink then you're going to want a commercial kitchen faucet with a low spout clearance.

You will want that low clearance so that the faucet head is closer to the counter level and even if you have a very deep sink than any splashing will be contained by the sink walls themselves. You should also consider it any dividers between your sinks as well. If you have a two basin sink, then check that your faucet has a swivel range so that the spout is not aimed directly at the divider.

  • Style

Going with a commercial faucet may seem like you are going to be stuck with industrial and modern styles. However, you can still get a commercial style kitchen faucet that embraces classic and traditional styles in line with your kitchen décor. Look for kitchen faucets that come in an oil rubbed bronze, or have more ornate styling, for example.

Just because you want the benefits and additional cleaning power of a pull-down pre rinse sprayer does not mean that you have to sacrifice the aesthetic and look that you love.

  • Finish

Island with sink

Your commercial kitchen sink will be available in many different finishes, and kitchen faucets are no different. You aren't stuck with just chrome finish, stainless steel, and nickel. While those are going to be the most common finishes that you will see, you can still go with darker finishes such as oil rubbed bronze or brass.

However, if you do choose a traditional finish, look for kitchen faucets that have been treated with a spot resistant coating.

Bright finishes show fingerprints and water spots quite easily, so if you get a finish that has a resistant layer that makes cleaning easier or hide fingerprints better, then you won't spend as much time polishing and wiping down your fixtures. An alternate finish is a brushed nickel. Kitchen faucets with a brushed nickel textured surface will hide fingerprints and water spots very well, and still look great with a modern kitchen décor.

Undermount sink
  • Handles

Most commercial kitchen faucets have single handle style controllers. Depending on where you're placing your faucet, a single handle may not suit. Some single handles do not move at all toward the rear of the faucet which means that you can install your commercial kitchen faucet with minimal backsplash clearance.

Other handles rotate a full 180 degrees from all the way back to all the way forward. This type of single lever is best suited for open sinks, such as those installed on kitchen islands.

Some single handle controllers are joystick controllers which allow for a very precise water flow and temperature control. Another thing to look at in your handle is whether or not it has ADA compliance.

ADA compliance in kitchen faucet handles simply means that not as much force is required to turn the handles on and off. This is a great benefit for people with arthritis, or other strength or range of motion disabilities.

  • Rotation

When speaking of rotation, we aren't talking about the handles anymore, instead we are talking about the faucet body itself. Having a faucet body that rotates from side to side has two primary benefits.

The first is that you can now swing your spray head a greater distance as the faucet body swivels to match your movements. The second benefit is that if you need to, you can move the kitchen faucet out of the way so that you can use the entire sink without your faucet there.

If you have a deep sink and you have a low spout clearance or spout height, then being able to move the spout out of the way is huge.

  • Wall Mount vs. Deck Mount Commercial Kitchen Faucets

You might not think that a commercial kitchen faucet can be mounted on the wall, but it can. However there are some definite drawbacks to wall mounting as opposed to traditional deck mounting. Let's look at some of those.

First, wall mounted kitchen faucets are more expensive. That is because a wall-mounted faucet has to be installed before the wall is finished. The faucet and plumbing have to be there while the studs are exposed. This brings up the second difference.

Wall-mounted kitchen faucets require special bracing. In general, a wall-mounted faucet is positioned between two studs. However, if your kitchen sink is not perfectly between two studs, then adjustments will have to be made. That will increase the cost of your renovation.

The last difference in a wall-mounted faucet is the access. Once your wall-mounted faucet is installed, you generally cannot get to it if something goes wrong. Instead, you will need to ask your plumber to install an access door where are you can get to the wet wall.

  • Warranty

With the advances involved in ceramic valves, it is very rare for kitchen faucets to develop leaks or drips for many years. However, manufacturing defects do still happen. In that case, a warranty is nice to have. Most major commercial kitchen faucet manufacturers offer a limited lifetime warranty to the original homeowner and purchaser.

What this means to you, is that if you move into a home with a Moen faucet, and something goes wrong, the warranty does not apply to you because you did not purchase the faucet and you did not install it.

When looking at warranties for your new build or renovation, be sure to read the fine print. There are a lot of conditions, such as some manufacturers will cover shipping of parts, and others will not.

Some manufacturers include the option to replace the entire faucet. However the warranty does not include installation, so even if they replace the faucet, you are still responsible for uninstalling the old one and installing the new one. In short, read the fine print and make sure you know what you're getting into, and if in doubt call the brand's customer service line.

  • Water Line Connections and Hardware

Fixing a Ball Faucet

This is a feature that goes beyond just knowing the difference between a 3/8 inch connector and a 1/2 inch connector. There are there are three main features that you might hear when looking at kitchen faucets.

Faucet centers refers to the distance between the holes on your kitchen sink. More specifically, it's the distance from the center of the leftmost hole to the center of the rightmost hole. In a commercial kitchen faucet, this is not as big of a concern, because they are for the most part single hole faucets. However, you still need to look out for the faucet hole diameter. Make sure that you know how wide the installation hole is on your sink. If the commercial kitchen faucet that you like has a smaller connector then you will need an adapter to allow it to fit.

A single inlet is used primarily when you don't need to adjust the water temperature of your faucet. The single inlet premixes hot and cold water to a temperature that you desire and have preset. This is a great feature for a secondary sink with one of the best touchless kitchen faucets or a kitchen sink dedicated to a hand-washing. To be honest, this isn’t something that a homeowner needs to worry about. But you will probably hear about it, so it’s nice to know what the term means.

A flexible connector essentially means that the hoses that connect from your inlet valves to your commercial kitchen faucet are not rigid. This will give you more options when it comes to placement of the lines, allowing you to snake the lines along the back of your cabinet wall and then fasten them so that you get the maximum storage room underneath your sink that is possible.

A flexible connector is also nice because that means if there is any sort of vibration or movement of your sink or faucet, you don't have to worry about the waterline connections flexing and potentially leaking.

  • Eco-Friendly Faucet Options

Everyone should be concerned with water conservation and the environment. One of the key regulations that has come out in the past 10 years has been California's new drought regulations which limits kitchen faucets to a 1.8 GPM flow rate and bathroom faucets to 1.2 GPM.

Even if you don't live in California, adopting one of these faucets for your next kitchen or bathroom is a great idea. With the advances in pressure and aerators, you don't even notice that the flow has gone down. Not to mention, as a bonus for investing in environmentally friendly fixtures, you can often find great rebates and tax breaks for local, state and even federal taxes.

That was certainly a lot of information to cover! Hopefully by now you have a solid foundation of how to shop for your next commercial kitchen faucet.

If you should have any other questions or you're looking for advice on other topics such as faucet water filters, we're here to help!
